On Set Location Class Breakdown

PART 1: IN THE CHAIRS.

Scenes are worked "in the chairs," face-to-face. Class explores in-depth the choice-making process for film, and the actors' ability to commit truthfully to the script, their partners, their choices.

PART 2: SCENES ARE WORKED.

Actors show their scene "on its feet" with blocking and activity, and work with the instructor on prop, staging, and choice modifications that will be necessary before shooting the scene.

PART 3: SCENES ARE SHOT.

Each scene is shot twice, one close-up per actor;  actors not on-camera work as crew or background in each other's scenes. CLIP INCLUDES OF FOOTAGE OF ASSEMBLED SCENE: UNBREAKABLE

PART 4: SCENES ARE VIEWED AND RECEIVED

The footage is screened. Individual feedback focuses on topics including continuity, relationship between choice and shot, the actor's commitment to choices, understood thought, how the actor is working with the shot to maximize performance, and much more.

Comprehensive Training

and a Solid Foundation

for Actors on The Film Set

These Ongoing Classes with John Pallotta are a place for actors to stay sharp and up-to-date, whether they are actively seeking work or currently working actors. John Pallotta is able to teach students of all levels from the “Beginning  Actor” to the “Seasoned Professional” at the same time with astonishing success; allowing everyone in the room to benefit from each other's work.

Ongoing Class is a quest for your unique way into the text and the character. All acting methods are foundation points to get you to be “moment-to-moment” within the given circumstances provided by the text and your imagination. Ongoing Class focuses on finding “Acting Tools That Work, So You Can Work”.

Ongoing Class meets once a week. Registration must be done prior to attending the first class and for on-going students at the end of the previous month. Classes are held at the locations listed above. We strongly encourage our students to rehearse outside the classroom. We find that 90% of the discovery process is found while actors are working together on their own.

On Set Location Class is our most intense ongoing class at John Pallotta Studio. John employs his 38 years of experience as an actor, director, teacher, and acting coach to help students meet their individual goals. Students are encouraged to break out of their comfort zones, make mistakes, test their limits, and expand their range as they learn to tackle difficult scenes in an "on set" environment.

Students work with a different scene, shooting style, and partner each week, using various camera angles (over the shoulder, documentary style, closeups, two shots), learning to take adjustments "on the fly" with line changes and improvisations, making sure to hit their marks—all while developing their concentration to craft nuanced performances. To better replicate a true on-set experience, students work off-book and do not rehearse with their scene partner before class, but instead prepare on their own as they would before a real shoot. All students receive a video of their work each week.
